Research Areas

Applied research and collaboration through the Center for International Intelligent Transportation Research supports transportation systems across border regions by advancing mobility, safety, efficiency and environmental understanding. The center’s work is organized into six strategic focus areas that strengthen cross-border connectivity, infrastructure planning, system performance and data-driven decision-making.

Cars stopped in traffic

Traffic Operations

Examines transportation system performance and mobility planning through research on traffic modeling, congestion mitigation strategies, and corridor and network analysis to support more effective roadway operations and planning.

Border Crossing Efficiency

Advances U.S.–Mexico border crossing efficiency through research on traffic systems, delay reduction, and data-driven strategies for the movement of people and goods.

Air Quality Initiatives

Supports research that improves understanding of transportation-related air quality and community vulnerability by enhancing the use of environmental, social, and health data to inform planning and reduce pollution impacts.

Other Program Support

Supports transportation initiatives for public agencies and regional partners by addressing policy, infrastructure, safety and funding challenges to improve mobility, equity and system performance.

El Paso Regional Support

Supports the El Paso region through applied transportation research that improves border efficiency, reduces congestion, and strengthens economic and environmental outcomes across key crossings and corridors.

International Research Initiatives

Advancing international transportation systems through data-driven research that improves cross-border mobility, trade efficiency and infrastructure planning.
